Sun Safety While Enjoying Water Activities in Mauritius

From exhilarating kitesurfing lessons to laidback boat rides and everything in between, there are dozens of exciting water activities in Mauritius. Thanks to its mild temperatures and crystal-clear waters, this subtropical island is a paradise for watersports enthusiasts.

But you should always prioritise sun safety if you’re going to spend extended time outdoors. In this article, we give you some tips for preventing sunburn and protecting yourself from harmful UV rays.

Wear a Decent SPF

A sunscreen with a decent SPF (over 30) should be at the very top of your packing list. You should always use a higher SPF on your face than you would on your body. Remember to apply sunscreen every morning, even if you don’t plan on getting into the water straight away and reapply regularly throughout the day.

Use a Rash Vest

If you’re planning to spend long hours in the water surfing, kiteboarding, or snorkelling, it may be a good idea to wear a rash vest. Not only will it help prevent chafing, but it will also greatly reduce your sun exposure and prevent you from getting burnt.

Limit Your Sun Exposure

While Vitamin D is beneficial for your body and your mind, too much sun exposure can result in exhaustion and heat stroke. Try to only spend a couple of hours in the sun at a time and opt for some time in the shade or indoors at your hotel during peak sunshine around midday.

Wear a Hat and Sunglasses

When packing for your holiday in Mauritius, don’t forget to pack a hat and sunglasses. While you may not be able to wear them when doing watersports like surfing, you can still wear them on boat rides and on kayaking trips.

Drink Lots of Water

Spending hours on end in the sun, enjoying water activities in Mauritius, can easily lead to dehydration if you aren’t careful. Make sure you are increasing your water intake during your subtropical holiday.
